Welcome!
The 17th of May is celebrated by the United Nations as the World
Telecommunication Day. On the 17th of May 1865 the first International
Telegraph Convention, the forerunner of the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) was signed in Paris. The ITU is a Geneva based UN Specialized
Agency. The World Telecommunication Day will attract special attention for
the role of electronic media and telecommuniocation for the economic and
social development in the global information society.
The city of Leipzig has since the political changes in 1989 continously
developed its profil as a "media city" of the 21st Century. A special role
in this concept is played by the universities of the city. More than 5000
students are studying in Leipzig Media, Communication, Computer and Information
Sciences, Economy, Policy and Law of Telecommunication,
Telecommunication Services and Networks etc.
With the Leipzig Lecture on the World Telecommunication Day the Medienstadt
Leipzig e.V. and the University of Leipzig want to make a contribution to
the discussion around the future of the global information society. The
Lecture offers also an opportunity for good contacts between students and
communication professionals both from policy and industry.
The Leipzig Lecture on the World Telecommunication Day is supported by the
ITU, the German Ministry of Economics and Labour and the Lord Mayor of the
City of Leipzig. It is supported by Siemens AG, Alcatel SEL Stiftung and
Deutsche Telekom AG.
