3. Leipzig Lecture on the World Telecommunication Day

Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP):
Free Talking around the Clock?

The Internet offers more than eMail. VOIP has started already ten years ago, but low “Quality of Service” limited its mass distribution so far. This has changed. Broadband and more sophisticated end devices have created new opportunities. The VOIP market is exploding. New players like Skype and Sipgate have entered the market and offer high quality low cost “always on” telecommunication services. While traditional telecommunication carriers based their business case on charging for distance and duration, VOIP does not know the barriers of time and space. Will VOIP undermined the business of the incumbent Telcos or will new financing models appear?
